COTE [UK] : The Certificate for Overseas Teachers of English, an internationally recognized certificate of Cambridge University, U.K. offers a unique opportunity to teachers with at least one year teaching experience, and with little or no previous training to become familiar with developments in methodology and up-grade their language and teaching skills. There are 150 contact hours, spread over a period of one year with one intensive training session during the summer and a series of seminars held on 20 Saturdays during the year. Trainees not only observe their tutors, and peers in classrooms but are also observed and guided by their tutors. They also do written assignments as part of their course. PTTC [Karachi only] : The Practical Teacher Training Course workshop sessions are organized during vacations to enable full-time teachers to attend this course without having to take time off from their work. The two workshop sessions are held during summer and winter breaks (Tier 1 and Tier 2 respectively). The second important feature of this programme is that, after introducing the techniques and ideas of teaching English more effectively through direct teaching in the workshop sessions, the participants are encouraged to apply them in the reality of their own classrooms. They are then required to report on these experiences in the form of written assignments. These assignments then form the basis of evaluation for this course. The majority of teachers who have attended this course in previous years have had a major rise in their careers. Some of the trainees are now acting as language consultants for other teachers in their schools. Short Term Courses : These courses are designed specially for teachers who cannot participate in longer training programmes but feel the need for training in any one particular area such as testing or questioning skills in the classroom. The short term courses are held as per announcement. Academic Sessions (Monthly Activity)
: SPELT organises this training programme in all chapters for teachers
who want to keep up-to-date with the theory and practice of teaching English
throughout their careers.
